I have been roped into fixing this issue for my dad who's computer was stuck in a bootloop, blue screening over and over.
I initially recovered the whole image from backups but it keeps happening. Investigating further it seems to happen when windows update tries to install 'ASMedia Technology Inc - USB - 8/29/2016 12:00:00 AM - 1.16.38.1.'
I have tried hiding the update with the wushowhide tool, and checked that it has registered as hidden, but it still nags the following on the Update status in the settings menu.

Can someone suggest how to fix this please. It has become even more important recently as the backup image of the drive is no longer available after the drive it was on failing.
*The bootloop happens prior to being able to get into any sort of safe mode. I cant even choose my ubuntu partition. It happens when the blue window with rotating **** splash screen appears. The only thing that can postpone this is going into the bios or pressing a key to choose a different boot media (usually a pen drive with acronis true image recovery on at the moment :- ) No other hotkeys lead to anything but the blue screen.
